Our Story

How Ananda Learning Came to Be

Ananda Learning grew out of a series of private study sessions held at a teak house on Ko Samui in early 2019. The host — a former bank officer and long-time resident of Surat Thani — had begun inviting neighbours and friends to discuss what she called "the questions nobody asked us when we were younger": how to read a provident fund statement, how to think about insurance in one's fifties, and how to prepare an estate that would not burden the next generation.

Word spread. Within a year, those informal evenings had grown into structured six-week programmes with printed materials, weekly sessions, and a small roster of guest instructors. In April 2021, Ananda Learning was formally registered, and the Ko Samui address became both the administrative home and the venue for in-person retreats.

The name draws from the Pali word for contentment — a quality the founders believed should accompany genuine financial understanding. The goal was never to make learners wealthy in a narrow sense, but to give them the clarity and vocabulary needed to approach their own finances without anxiety.

Our Mission

What We Are Here to Do

Ananda Learning exists to make financial education available to adults who were not given structured guidance earlier in life — and who now, in their forties, fifties, and beyond, find themselves managing household accounts, investment portfolios, or estate preparations without a clear map.

We do not teach people to seek high returns or to change their financial identity overnight. We teach them to read what they already have, to ask better questions of their advisors, and to make decisions they understand.

Every aspect of our programme — the pace, the size of each cohort, the inclusion of printed materials, the availability of private consultations — reflects a respect for the adult learner. We build our courses around the reality that our students are busy, experienced, and capable of deep engagement when the material is presented with care.

"Financial clarity is not a destination — it is a practice. Our role is to make that practice as accessible as possible."

— Ananda Learning, founding principles

Our Values

What We Believe In

Patience

Good understanding takes time. We never rush a concept, and we never pressure a learner to reach a conclusion before they are ready.

Honesty

We present facts clearly, acknowledge uncertainty where it exists, and never overstate what financial knowledge alone can achieve.

Respect

Every learner arrives with decades of lived experience. Our role is to add structure to that experience, not to replace it.

Continuity

Financial understanding builds across a lifetime. Our programmes are designed so that what you learn today remains relevant and useful years from now.

How We Work

Our Standards and Protocols

Certified Instructors Only

Every instructor holds a current qualification relevant to their subject — whether that is a financial advisory licence, a legal practising certificate, or a recognised financial education credential.

Strict Confidentiality

All personal financial information shared in consultations and private sessions is held in confidence. We follow a written confidentiality protocol that all instructors and advisors sign before joining the programme.

Annual Curriculum Review

Each course is reviewed every year against changes in Thai tax law, banking regulations, and estate planning frameworks. Materials are updated before each new intake begins.

Cohort Size Limits

No course group exceeds twelve participants. This is not a marketing claim but a structural commitment — groups above this size cannot maintain the quality of personal engagement we consider essential.

Data Protection

We collect only the personal data necessary for course administration and communication. We do not sell or share learner data with third parties, and learners may request deletion of their records at any time.

Post-Programme Evaluation

Every cohort completes a detailed evaluation at the end of each programme. Results are reviewed by the academic director and used directly in the next curriculum update.

Financial Education Grounded in Thai Practice

Ananda Learning occupies an unusual position in Thai adult education. Unlike large seminars that draw hundreds of attendees into a single hall for a day of presentations, we maintain small cohorts in which each learner's circumstances are known to the instructor. Unlike online-only platforms that deliver pre-recorded content, we schedule live sessions each week and offer genuine opportunities for question and discussion.

Our courses are oriented toward the Thai financial system. When we discuss provident funds, we discuss Thai provident fund structures. When we discuss wills, we discuss Thai civil and commercial code provisions and the coordination with overseas assets that many Ko Samui residents face. This specificity is what distinguishes a course designed for this audience from a translated international curriculum.

We are based at Ko Samui because the island carries a particular mix of long-term Thai residents, returning overseas workers, and retirees with mixed Thai and international financial profiles. These are exactly the learners our courses serve well. Our location also allows us to hold the in-person retreats that form the centrepiece of the senior programme in a setting that is genuinely conducive to the kind of unhurried reflection that estate and family conversations require.
